Airfield to the Mara Simba Lodge, 13/09/99

These animals were spotted as we skirted the National Park from the Sekanani Gate to the Lodge.

Grant's Gazelle

Male Impala

Topi and Grant's Zebra

This photo shows both Topi and Grant's Zebra together. I don't recall having seen Topi before. They are a breed of hartebeest and can be distinguished by the grey patch on their rump.

Here we have the male Impala rounding up his harem. There are other male Impala in the area ( we saw them ) so he's keeping a close guard on his brood to spoil their fun.
We had come to the Mara this time in the hope of seeing herds of Wildebeest during the migration. We didn't expect to see them this early!
Notice how they are strung out - I don't think this is simply follow-my-leader, but a cooling mechanism. The single line ensures one animal shades the next and the shadows show their alignment to the sun further reduces their exposure to its' light.
