Animals in and around Voi Lodge, 30/12/99

Rock Hyrax. E
The driver rushed to this rocky outcrop as he had heard there was a lion in the vicinity, but we didn't see it in 1/2 hour of looking. He had however passed some elephant, zebra and waterbuck in his haste to get here. They would possibly have been the best 'spots' of the day.

This little chap must have had a death wish, as we nearly ran him over!
Tortoise

As usual we dropped in to Voi Lodge for the magnificent views across the plain, from its' higher location. This usually costs us a coffee but on this occasion it was beer. Unfortunately the game weren't playing again and we had to put up with the baboons.

We noticed there appeared to be a dominant male that hogged the water tap, even fighting off the babies.

Mother with her baby
Baboons can appear rather tame, but are intimidating when they come up close. We tended to move out of their way. This mother with her baby was particularly confident, quite happily sitting right alongside us and allowing us to get these great photos. She'd spotted a few other tourists as they came out of the lodge and was eyeing them up closely. As they approached she jumped off the wall, ran up to one of the women and tried to snatch the watch from her wrist. Even after the woman had put it in her handbag the baboon went for it again!
