Animals seen on Early Morning Bush Safari, 31/12/99

We had booked our walking safari many months before and had prepared our fellow travellers to bring warm clothing, long trousers and sturdy footwear. The evening before two female tourists overheard our preparations and asked the camp staff if they could join us. Unfortunately they agreed and we were a little taken aback when they came down in shorts and open toed sandals! After that it was downhill all the way as they treated it as a Sunday afternoon walk in the park. They complained of the rough route the guides took us so we spent about half our time walking on the road. What little chance this afforded us to spot any game was totally wiped out as they discussed their previous holidays in Europe at the top of their voices!

We suggested to the staff that the experience is described as a 'Bush Safari' and not a walking safari, which may prepare the uninitiated for what would be involved and expected of them.

We had seen so little game and walked for such a short period we had time to wander downstream before breakfast. It was disappointing to realise we spotted more animals in 5 minutes just outside camp than we had in a hour's walk!

The camp's hippo did us proud again just before we left & we managed a few good photos of him in and out of the water.
